The Consequences of Displacement in Colonial Urbanization: Comparative Analysis of Jerusalem and Hebron.

Jerusalem and Hebron are two colonized, hyper-contested and divided cities where ‘urban apartheid’ and ‘urbicide’ are tools for urban colonialism and indigenous dispossession. This study highlights the place of indigenous resistance by staying, (‘sumud’ in Arabic), notions of Palestinian displacement, abandoned properties, ‘absence’ and relocation of the displaced Palestinians in alternative formal and informal ‘bottom up’ processes, working for persisting ‘presence’. The study argues that the Palestinians are witnessing another period of their historical struggles against territorial dispossession, shaped by polarized conceptions of native/ settler and citizen/ non-citizen. It suggests that the fuzzy boundaries between external and internal colonization is inseparable from processes of displacing the indigenous Palestinians from their territory, based on exclusive colonial principles of historical and religious rights. These principles clash with the Palestinian struggles over territory, space production, self-determination, identity, mobilization, resistance and tactics which they innovate to subvert major Israeli urban colonial strategies.
